​Join the Movement is hosting a panel of local experts to teach parents and teens how to stay safe on social media. The free event is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20th, in the auditorium at Elkhorn Area High School.

"As parents, it's difficult to keep up with what's going on with social media. It seems like there's a new app every other day," said Dawn Fiedler, founder and president of Join the Movement. "At our presentation, parents will find out what to look for and how to monitor their children's use of cell phones and computers."

The panel includes representatives from Join the Movement, the Sheriff's Office, the District Attorney's Office, the Walworth County Child Advocacy Center and the Tree House Child and Family Center, among others. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.at the high school, 482 E. Geneva St., Elkhorn.

Join the Movement trained eight new volunteer advocates to help victims of trafficking and abuse in March and is looking to train even more this month.
On April 1st, Join the Movement started offering advocacy at Aurora Health Care's Lakeland Hospital to victims of human trafficking, domestic abuse and sexual assault. Advocates are special people who are trained to provide crisis counseling and help a victim through the process of being checked out at the hospital.
The advocate also provides support if the victim wants to report to law enforcement and have physical evidence collected for potential prosecution of the offender.
Initial training requires two in-person, three-hour sessions the evenings of April 21 and April 28 at an Elkhorn-area church. Cost is $40. Pre-registration is required.
Additional training to build skills will be offered monthly at no cost.

​Volunteer Advocates Needed to Help Trafficking Victims

What if you could help someone get through the worst day of their life? Would you do it?
That is what it means to be a volunteer advocate in Walworth County for someone who is the victim of a crime such as human trafficking, sexual violence or domestic abuse. Advocates are special people who are trained to provide crisis counseling and help a victim through the process of being checked out at a local hospital.
The advocate also provides support if the victim wants to report to law enforcement, although some victims choose not to, which is their right.
“It is an amazing gift to be able to help someone through the process of making sure their body is OK after a traumatic incident,” said Heidi Lloyd, former director of a domestic violence and sexual assault support center in Elkhorn. Two years after retiring, Lloyd continues to help victims as a volunteer.
Join the Movement, a Walworth County-based advocacy group for victims of sexual and domestic crimes, is offering training to prospective volunteer advocates. Join the Movement focuses on victims of human trafficking and sexual assault.

What does being a volunteer advocate include?

Join the Movement Opens an Office on March 7th!
For the first time since its inception, Join the Movement will have a real office.
When Join the Movement began five years ago as a grassroots effort to end human trafficking, it operated primarily out of the home of its founder and president, Dawn Heath Fiedler. But as of March 7th, JTM will have an office in the Lakeland Administrative Offices building on the hospital campus of Aurora’s Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn.
Fiedler said the move comes at just the right time.
“We are poised to do even more in our communities to help survivors of human trafficking as well as sexual and domestic violence,” she said. “Our goal is to continue to raise awareness and encourage prevention. Having office space to coordinate our efforts—especially right next to the hospital—will help us immensely.”
The physical address is W4051 County Highway NN in Elkhorn, although Join the Movement will continue to get its mail at PO Box 133, Elkhorn, WI 53121.

Trafficking Occurs in Rural & Urban Areas
Any community can experience sex trafficking, whether it's a big city or a rural area with lakes and other amenities that attract tourists. Even Walworth County.

According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, people may be especially vulnerable to trafficking if they:

• Have an unstable living situation
• Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence
• Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system
• Are undocumented immigrants
• Are facing poverty or economic need
• Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue
• Are addicted to drugs or alcohol

Learn the Basics to Help Prevent Human Trafficking
 Human trafficking is alive and well in Walworth County, unfortunately, but you can help identify and stop the problem.
 Attend an awareness event at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 28th at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 107 W. Walworth St., in Elkhorn. You'll learn the red flags that indicate human trafficking may be present.
 You'll also learn how to help keep children and teens safe on social media. One of the best ways to help kids stay out of harm's way is to have the information and resources.
 The presenter will be Dawn Heath-Fiedler, president and founder of Join the Movement. The event will be in the lower level of the church. There is no cost.

​A Special Service at Mt. Zion to Pray for Victims

​Predators try to ‘groom’ their victims.
What does that mean?
 A person who is trying to sexually abuse a child often “grooms” the potential victim first, so the sexual advance doesn’t seem so out of place when it happens.
 The ongoing Ghislaine Maxwell trial has shed considerable light on this practice. Maxwell, a British socialite and longtime acquaintance of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is accused of sex trafficking and helping Epstein gain access to underage girls. She is on trial in New York.
 It is essential to understand the grooming process to recognize what’s really happening when a predator is trying to win over his or her next young victim. A recent article by TIME* magazine clearly explains what grooming is:
 “In 2015, Daniel Pollack, a professor at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University, outlined for the American Bar Association some of the dozens of strategies that groomers use for abuse of children in particular.
 “These include frequently creating opportunities to be alone with a child; fixating on a child; finding opportunities to buy the child gifts; walking in on a child changing; tickling a child and “accidentally” touching their genitalia; suggesting activities that involve removing clothes like massage or swimming; playing games that involve intimate touching like playing doctor; talking about sexually explicit things under the guise of education; and showing a child sexually explicit images.”
 Unfortunately, predators seem to instinctively know which scenarios have the greatest chance of success, based on the personality of the potential victim. They also work very hard at gaining the friendship and trust of the child’s parents or guardians, often by helping out the family.
 In cases where potential victims have run away from home and are alone and financially vulnerable, predators offer food, shelter, presents and money in an effort to build the teen’s trust.

Victim Bravely Shares Impact of Trafficking
 A woman who was sexually trafficked as a child bravely shared her story for only the second time in public at a Join the Movement event in Lake Mills.
 Although it has been two decades since the abuse occurred in metropolitan Milwaukee, the woman said she still has trouble verbalizing what happened. And it can still affect her emotional wellbeing to the point that she has trouble focusing and going about her daily life.
 Her story is testament to the devastating, long-lasting issues that can be created by sexual abuse: problems with self-esteem, trust, close relationships and eating disorders.
 Her story was part of the presentation on “Social Media’s Role in Human Trafficking” Sept. 22 at Lake Mills High School. Although it was incredibly difficult for her to share, the audience, panel members and Join the Movement board members applauded her courage and dedication to helping others learn from her experiences.

Police Learn More about Trafficking Indicators
Police officers in the city of Delavan heard real-life examples that showed how to spot human trafficking during a two-day workshop recently. The training was coordinated by Detective Robert Craig of the Delavan Police Department and Dawn Heath-Fiedler, founder and president of Join the Movement.

The seminar focused on practical advice to help sort out suspicious situations involving children and teens. Often, the perpetrator has a prepared story and has threatened or coerced the children to go along. But separating the parties and asking the right questions can poke holes in the story and expose the danger the children really face.

Keeping Kids Safe Online Requires Action
Hundreds of teens and parents of young children left smarter about preventing sexual abuse and human trafficking after National Night Out in Elkhorn last month. Join the Movement board members distributed internet safety information to teens and adults while also giving out free toys to kids accompanied by an adult. In all, 2,500 families attended National Night Out. Dozens of agencies staffed educational booths.

Join the Movement's goal was to give parents the tools they need to understand and monitor the online activities of their children. JTM volunteers met with parents one on one, telling them it takes time and vigilance to make sure their children are staying safe.

The internet has become the No. 1 hunting ground for sexual predators looking for vulnerable kids, and their tactics are as varied as the individuals. Often sex offenders succeed by pretending to be children themselves.

The FBI estimates there are about 500,000 online predators active each day. Over half of the victims are ages 12 to 15. Of those, 89% of victims are contacted by online predators through chat rooms and instant messaging, according to FBI stats.

DAS Fest & B-I-N-G-O Spell ‘Success’
The audience was enthusiastic though small on the first day of DAS Fest, when Join the Movement hosted Deutsch Bingo at the inaugural German-themed festival in Elkhorn. Founder and President Dawn Heath-Fiedler explained why her heart told her to start Join the Movement and advocate for children and adults affected by human trafficking. The Aug. 13th event raised $450 to help fund awareness and prevention efforts. DAS Fest is expected to return to the Walworth County Fairgrounds in August of 2022. The biggest lesson? When you win, you don’t yell “Bingo.” Instead, it’s “Volltreffer,” which in German means “direct hit” or “bull’s-eye.”

Bring your kids to National Night Out Aug. 3
If Halloween and a safety fair were combined into one event, it would be called National Night Out. And it’s coming to Elkhorn on Tuesday, Aug. 3rd from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Walworth County Fairgrounds. For kids, there’s tons of treats, the chance to see fire trucks and police cars up close, children’s games, canine demonstrations and even a unicorn! Community non-profits, including Join the Movement, will be on hand with information to prevent human trafficking and other personal violence. Please join us. It’s free!

How sex traffickers trick teens into ‘the life’
When it comes to acting, sex traffickers could win awards for the ways they convince teens to start having sex for money. Both boys and girls are targeted as victims. The teens are often left broke and broken, feeling betrayed, trapped and hopeless. Here are three common “roles” traffickers play to woo vulnerable youth:

1. The Boyfriend: This “Romeo” initially showers his prey with compliments and presents. He professes his love and a strong desire to create a family together. Then he tells the girl she needs to sell her body to make their dream come true. He transitions from boyfriend to a full-fledged pimp, threatening and abusing his victim into cooperation. All pretenses of romance disappear.
2. The Gorilla: This guy uses fear from the get-go. He controls his girls by force, often including daily beatings. His first encounter with a vulnerable victim might be rape. The girl learns quickly that saying no to anything he says puts her in life in mortal danger.
3. The CEO: Sex is his business, and he’s all business. He sees girls as property, to be used and reused as long as he keeps making money. He brags about himself, his riches and his power to “make someone’s life”. His relationships often start with promises of a high-profile modeling career; they almost never materialize.

Love to play Bingo? Join us Aug. 13th at DAS Fest!
Join the Movement will host German Bingo on opening day of DAS Fest Friday, Aug. 13, at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn. DAS Fest means “The Festival” in German. This first-time event celebrates all things German: food, music, culture and games.

Join us in Horticulture Hall, which will be renamed “Trixi’s Game Garten” for Das Fest. Games start at 3:30 p.m. and continue till the last round begins at 8:30 p.m. Games begin on the half-hour. Cost is $5 for two Bingo cards, which is an hour of game play.

There’s one rule change from traditional Bingo. You must shout “Volltreffer” when you win! It means “bulls-eye” in German. Must be 21 or older. Cash only. ATMs will be available at the fairgrounds.

You are invited to join our FUN fundraiser! Money raised will support local efforts to educate our communities about the dangers of human trafficking plus how to recognize it, report it and stop it.

Dirndls, lederhosen and feathered Alpine hats are optional. DAS Fest will have polka bands, German dancers, dachshund races, food from Mader’s and other vendors, a Saturday morning 5K run, a special Sunday morning church service, and plenty more.

DAS Fest hours are 3-11 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13; from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14; and from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15th. Admission is free. DAS Fest promises to be wunderbar!

JTM advises seniors to watch for scams
Sometimes even those closest to senior citizens are out to take advantage. Watching for scams was one of the ideas presented by Dawn Heath-Fiedler, founder and president of Join the Movement Events. She spoke recently to the Prime Timers group and guests at Calvary Community Church in Williams Bay.

Care takers, friends and even family have managed to divert money, valuables, prescription drugs and other assets from senior citizens in Walworth County over the past few years, according to news reports. Some scams start out as phone calls from strangers pretending to represent a credit card company, a bank or a utility provider. Seniors are advised to never give out their credit card or bank information to callers.

Fiedler said not everyone is out to exploit our most vulnerable citizens. "We encourage seniors to ask questions and get a second opinion," she suggested.

Is Walworth County vulnerable to trafficking?
With its picturesque lakes and rolling farm fields, Walworth County doesn’t look like it would be attractive to sex traffickers. But the truth is trafficking is almost everywhere. The only way NOT to find it is to not look for it.

What makes Walworth County vulnerable to traffickers? Here are a few facts:

Any city or county with an Interstate highway nearby is vulnerable because it’s easy for traffickers to flee the area quickly. They can be in another state, which means a different law enforcement jurisdiction, within an hour or two. Interstate highways also offer high-speed, multi-lane getaway access. Sometimes, by the time someone has reported a suspicious situation in one location, the trafficker has already moved to the next location.

Tourism brings many good things, and Walworth County is fortunate to have lakes and other attractions that draw large numbers of vacationers and day-trippers. Tourist crowds also increase the demand for sex trafficking, as some people see the time away from home as an opportunity to do something inappropriate with lower risk that family and friends will find out.

Gentlemen’s Clubs, also known by the less flattering term “strip clubs,” are notorious for attracting people interested in having sex for money. Not all clubs, of course. And many of the sex sales are more apt to take place in the parking lot than the actual business establishment. Clubs are a well-documented magnet for sex trafficking nationwide.

Truck stops are another trafficking magnet. There sit scores of trucks filled with drivers who spend much of the day alone in their rigs, until they stop for food, a shower and/or gas. Traffickers believe that some of the drivers will pay for companionship.

Rest stops are often a similar target. Walworth County has two rest areas on Interstate Highway 43.

Do all of these factors mean that sex trafficking is happening right here in Walworth County right now? No. But it does mean that the conditions are ripe for sex trafficking on any given day. Public records show arrests have been made and suspicious activities have been reported.

Restaurant Week Promotes Charities & Good Eating!

Are you ready for some great food supporting a great cause? Lake Geneva Restaurant Week starts Saturday, April 24th.

You have nine days to enjoy a culinary adventure around the Lake Geneva area while supporting local non-profit organizations, including ours!

Twenty-five area restaurants are participating, and this year Join the Movement Events is one of the chosen charities! Folks can dine in or take out. Custom fixed-price menus are set up at each venue—with breakfast for $10, lunch options at $10 & $15, and dinner choices at $25 & $35.

Restaurants are participating in Lake Geneva, Fontana, Williams Bay, Elkhorn and Delavan. Restaurant Week is an opportunity to learn about and support local charities while enjoying the local dining scene.

With each meal at a participating restaurant, customers receive a ballot to vote for the charity they want to receive a monetary donation from the Restaurant Week Charity Check Sponsor.

We at Join the Movement Events encourage you to vote for Join the Movement, of course, to help us increase awareness and education about human trafficking. We appreciate you!

The charity with the most votes at the end of Restaurant Week will receive $5,000. Four runner-up non-profits will receive $1,000 each.

Focus for April: Awareness of Child Sexual Abuse
April is a big month for awareness of events that affect trafficking survivors. April is both Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. These provide opportunities to learn more about the signs of abuse and prevention techniques. Runaways are especially vulnerable to sex trafficking. Of the more than 23,500 runaways reported in 2018 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, one in seven were likely victims of child sex trafficking, reports unicefusa.org.

What are the Warning Signs of Trafficking?
People in any community can experience sex trafficking, whether they live in a rural or urban area. This is true for other crimes as well. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, people may be especially vulnerable to trafficking if they:

• Have an unstable living situation
• Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence
• Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system
• Are undocumented immigrants
• Are facing poverty or economic need
• Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue
• Are addicted to drugs or alcohol
