Last call for gala tickets for Friday, April 8th!

We are getting down to the wire! There are two quickly approaching opportunities to help sex trafficking victims through Join the Movement. 

No. 1: Our gala is this Friday night, April 8th, at Lake Lawn Resort. See below to get tickets.

No. 2: Become a volunteer advocate so you can provide support to a victim at a hospital or law enforcement agency. Our next set of trainings is April 21 and April 28. See below.

Wednesday, April 20th:
Learn to Keep Yourself & Your Kids Safe on Social Media

​Join the Movement is hosting a panel of local experts to teach parents and teens how to stay safe on social media. The free event is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20th, in the auditorium at Elkhorn Area High School.

"As parents, it's difficult to keep up with what's going on with social media. It seems like there's a new app every other day," said Dawn Fiedler, founder and president of Join the Movement. "At our presentation, parents will find out what to look for and how to monitor their children's use of cell phones and computers."

The panel includes representatives from Join the Movement, the Sheriff's Office, the District Attorney's Office, the Walworth County Child Advocacy Center and the Tree House Child and Family Center, among others. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.at the high school, 482 E. Geneva St., Elkhorn.

​You Could Help a Trafficking Victim through Trauma

Join the Movement trained eight new volunteer advocates to help victims of trafficking and abuse in March and is looking to train even more this month.
On April 1st, Join the Movement started offering advocacy at Aurora Health Care's Lakeland Hospital to victims of human trafficking, domestic abuse and sexual assault. Advocates are special people who are trained to provide crisis counseling and help a victim through the process of being checked out at the hospital.
The advocate also provides support if the victim wants to report to law enforcement and have physical evidence collected for potential prosecution of the offender.
Initial training requires two in-person, three-hour sessions the evenings of April 21 and April 28 at an Elkhorn-area church. Cost is $40. Pre-registration is required.
Additional training to build skills will be offered monthly at no cost.
“Volunteer advocates are a critical piece of our efforts to increase services for victims,” said Dawn Heath Fiedler, founder and president of Join the Movement. “No one should have to experience the trauma of sexual violence alone, whether it’s from human trafficking or rape.”

In addition to completing training, volunteer advocates must be 18 or older, fill out a volunteer application and pass a criminal background check.
Trafficking and sexual assault can affect people of any age, gender, sexual orientation and/or ethnicity.

There's Just Days till our Friday Gala!
Get Tickets through Wednesday, April 6th

We are counting down the days until our first-annual gala and fundraiser! It's this Friday, April 8th. The deadline to buy tickets online is Wednesday, April 6th at 11:59 p.m. Go to jtme.org/fundraiser.
Although we call it a “gala,” don’t let that scare you. As long as you come prepared to learn about human trafficking and dress like you’re headed to the office, you’re fine. There's no need for ball gowns or fancy suits.
The event theme is A Garden Party. Tickets are $75 each. That includes a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres and desserts at 5:30 p.m., followed by a survivor's presentation at 6:30 p.m. April 8th at Lake Lawn Resort, 2400 Geneva St, Delavan.
The featured presenter, Theresa Flores, will talk about her experience being a Michigan high school student during the day while being blackmailed into sex trafficking at night. Flores is the author of the book “The Slave Across the Street: The True Story of How an American Teen Survived the World of Human Trafficking.”
The event will also include a fun silent auction with lots of items to spruce up your home or give as gifts.
